17TH ANNUAL SURGICAL UPDATE - RECTAL CANCER
VANCOUVER DECEMBER 2, 2000
Hartley Stern, Ottawa
Purpose:
To design a more efficient and accessible system to screen for and treat patients with colorectal cancer (CRC).
Introduction:
The Ottawa Hospital serves one million people and considered improvements in the delivery of CRC services because:
- 50% of CRC patients in the Region do Not get referred for adjuvant therapy
- population screening is being considered by the Ontario Ministry of Health
- a successful model for breast cancer was implemented locally.
Methods:
Two needs assessment surveys were developed (one for patients, one for family member/friends). Two hundred surveys were mailed to patients diagnosed and treated
for CRC and family members.
Results:
The survey results clearly demonstrate support for a Colorectal Cancer Assessment Centre and the following key elements design (to be presented). These include nurse
navigator; risk assessment; genetic testing; multi-disciplinary diagnostic approach and triaging counselling by risk. 1200 visits a year for these purposes are expected.
Additionally, 400 patients with established CRC will be assessed in a multidisciplinary format.
Conclusion:
We believe we have created a novel approach to delivering CRC services to best meet the needs of a mid-size population. The specifics of the survey and the design
of the new centre will be presented.
